Week 6 

Your task is to write a thank you letter to either Macashins or Woollaston Winery in appreciation of the time and effort they put into our visit last Friday.
Year 7 girls/Year 8 boys are to write to Macashins
Yr 7 boys/Year 8 girls are to write to Woollaston Winer 
Address the letters to the General Manager of each business.  Proof read and edit your work.  Any errors will mean you will need to copy it out again.
Make sure you say what you found particularly interesting or what you enjoyed about the trip. 

Task 2
Year 8 literacy assignment due on Friday

Everyone else:-  Go on to your MATHLETICS SITE and win 500 points by Friday.
 
 


Week 5
This week we are visiting Woollaston Winery and McCashins brewerey to have a look at industries which have relied on the use of yeast.  Another aspect of our visit will be to find out about the marketing side of the business.
In order to develop an understanding of how products are marketed you need to do the following for homework

1 Find 3 advertisements for a product, service or lifestyle choice (eg smokefree) and cut them out and stick them into your homework book or screen shot them and out them onto your google site (command + shift + 4 on a mac).
2 underneath each ad. explain who the target audience is
and
3 What the creator had done in order to capture the audience's attention.


Task 2
investigate another foodstuff or process that is helped by the work of a microbe.  Write a short explanation of this process. Use diagrams if needed
(some ideas could be cheesemaking, composting, biosolids disposal)



Week 4
There are lots of bits and pieces not completed from the last two weeks.  Make sure you get everything up to date this week.  Year 8s - you have to complete the literacy task by the end of week 6.

Grammar sheets will be available tomorrow for those students that did not complete them last week.

This week's homework
 Investigate what fermentation is and how it happens.  Write an explanatory paragraph on your google site about it (You can do it into your homework book if you prefer)

Go onto your mathletics website and earn yourself some points - You need to look at decimal rounding, adding and ordering as this will come up for many of you in your test later this week.

Week 3


maths

This week we will bee  investigating speed and measuring our speed for different activities. As part of this we will doing some research reading in maths and presenting our findings. Ask your child to tell you about what they have found out and how they are going to present their information to the class. Your will need to select one of the three topics for a homework investigation.
  • compare the speed of human world record holders to several different animals using a graph
  •  
  • graph the men's and women's 100m sprint times for the past 10 Olympic Games
  •  
  • research an animal with a long migration route (for example godwits or eels) and calculate the speed at which they migrate.
You can do this homework straight onto your googlesite if you want.  Please make sure the privacy settings include 'kotukuclass@gmail.com' can edit.
 Literacy
spelling - choose 5 of your vocabulary words and use each one in sentence.   Find 5 more vocabulary words that can be used for next weeks vocabulary games.  You need to include the word, the word class (if it is a noun, adjective or verb and its meaning.  Put these words onto your googlesite on the literacy page.

Research into the life of Louis Pasteur, a world famous scientist who made some life changing discoveries about some micro-organsims.
Create an information web about Pasteur on your googlesite.  You can use animation, slideshow etc and present the key information about Pasteur's life and his discoveries and what impact they made on the food industry.  You will need to plan your presentation using some key questions that you will research.  Look at what is written above and create your questions making sure you cover the areas mentioned.  Try to include only relevant detail and remember as much as possible to put it in your own words.

WEEK ONE
TASK ONE
In maths this week we are going to measuring and converting between units.  Find 3 round objects in your house and think about how you could measure their circumference.  Record what you did to measure this in your homework book.  You could choose for example a bike wheel, a plate etc
 TASK TWO
If you have not handed in a published version of your essay about life in Victorian Britain from last term you need to do so this week.


YEAR 8 LITERACY GROUP ONLY
Year 8 literacy assignment.  We did not get this done last term and so it will be carried on into this term.  You have until the end of week 5 to complete this work but you will be given time during literacy to work on it too, so all other homework must be completed.

 TASK THREE
Googlesites 
Time for a bit of a spruce up.  

You need to make a few new pages. 

 One of them is to be called 
'Yeast - the mighty microbe' , a second one is to be called 'Literacy term four' and the third page is to be called Reflections.  You can add designs and use templates/fonts/colours as you choose.  

When you have cleaned up your google site go to your Reflections Page and  make an entry using the title 'How can I get the most out of the last term of 2012.'  Write a paragraph in response to this.
If you have had your google site disabled you will need to make another one.  You can do so using the glass gmail  or your own gmail address.  When you have got a site up, ensure that you have opened the privacy settings so that I can edit by adding the kotuku class gmail address into the 'add friends' box.  If you can't manage to set up a site on your own let me know and I will get or give you some technical assistanc.

Task 4
Go to the free rice link on the home page of the blog and follow directions to earn rice grains for the starving people of the world. ( login  as kotukuclass and password whiteheron). 









TERM 3 
Week 10
mathletics - Aim for another 500 points this week.

You all need to complete 2 50 word short short stories using our Hanmer Camp as your theme.  You can write about any aspect that you choose.  Remember we are working on using precise words to say what we mean.  If you have already completed your short stories then please post them on your google site under a Hanmer page.

In addition you need to put an entry into any or all of the Short Story competitions that Mr Dorman is running.  Go to the blog for the link to the pictures.  I will be looking for the entries during the week!


Go to the History Tab on the front page of the blog.  Click onto the link under the history tab that says 'What it was like for children living in Victorian Britain" to read some information about the life of children in Victorian Britain.  Make notes on the following

Mathletics
Earn yourself 500 points.  I have assigned you some new areas to work on so there should be plenty for you to do.  

Writing
WRITING - Find one memorable image from the London Games. Write a detailed description about the image. Your description should paint a vivid picture of what can be seen.
OR
The Olympic Committee has decided that five sports must be cut for the next Olympics and five new sports be bought in. Write an article explaining which sports should go and what five will come in. You must provide reasons for each decision you make.

Hanmer Brochure
You will be given some time in school to get this piece of work finished but it MUST be finished by Friday and handed in. So far I have had about 4 completed brochures.  Tick your name on the sheet on the board when you have handed in this piece of work




HOMEWORK - TERM 3 WEEK 6

Your task this week is to write a speech for a class speech competition.  This is an annual event with the best in the class going forward to a senior competition and the winners of this going through to an intermediate competition held at Waimea Intermediate school.

Your speech needs to be between 3 and 5 minutes long. I will give you the marking schedule for the speech as well as some time in class to start writing it.

I am expecting you all to get back onto the mathletics website and be earning yourselves 500 points a week.  I will be tracking who is doing what so make sure you use site.  See me if you are having difficulties accessing the material.  You have until Sunday each week to do your mathletics.


Homework - Term 3, Week 5

Everything has a purpose!  Everything has an effect!

Your homework this week is to choose an item and explain its purpose and effects.  The item could be anything, from Velcro to the Modern Olympic Games!  Be original :)
 
  •         Use the Explanation checklist in your Literacy book to help you
  •     Use diagrams or drawings to aid your explanation
  •         Edit and proofread your work, and then do a buddy-check!

 Remember that quality is more important than quantity!!





REMINDER!!  

Many of you have not yet put your biographies on your Google site ‘Literacy’ page.  Many of you have also not put your force diagrams on your Google site ‘Science’ page.  This needs to be done as soon as possible so I can give you feedback.  I know you have done some great work so I can’t wait to see it on your Google site! (If you have problems doing this you need to see me!)

Homework – Term 3 Week 4

Managing Self
Your task this week is to show evidence of having used the Managing Self cycle!  Use the Explanation writing task to do this.  

Instructions:
  
           1.    Make 4 headings in your HW books (Use 2 pages, half a page for each heading)

2.       Make comprehensive notes on about your goals and plans etc. for the explanation writing task, under each heading. We will review these as a class on Monday :)
3.      Use a different coloured pen to show new goals that relate to your Evaluation and Reflection.

  1.                        Find and fix at least 5 spelling, grammar or punctuation errors 
  2.                        Make at least 3 improvements to your writing

·       More formal vocabulary (‘however’ instead of ‘but’)
·       Complex sentences
·       Interesting openers/conclusions etc.
